Congratulations, you’re probably an entrepreneur

This article is from Startups

Don’t idealise starting a business!
Media hype will sucker many into starting a business, but don’t be fooled – making profit consume you and ‘freedom’ has its downsides
By the Secret Entrepreneur

One of the biggest shifts in the last 10 years has been the acceptance of ‘entrepreneur’ as a recognised, even aspirational position. When I first started out, running my own business was definitely not a mainstream choice.

These days, there’s a huge amount of support available for those starting out, and a lot of media encouragement for people to do so. I think this is fantastic. Without a doubt a very good thing.

What really bugs me though is that the mainstream press have got on board too – and not unsurprisingly – give totally the wrong impression of entrepreneurship. Every ‘overnight success’ they talk about has probably taken a decade or more. A lot of them couldn’t even be really classed as business success at all – if your definition involves making a cash profit, which mine certainly does.

Let’s get this straight. Running your own business is incredibly hard work. It’s stressful, demanding and it will absolutely take over your life, for at least a few years, if you want to build an enterprise that will make money, create employment and that you could eventually sell on (you may not want to sell, but being able to do so is what separates a real business from a job where you just happen to be the boss).

You may not get it right the first time around. Or the second. You’ll almost certainly lose a lot of money before you make some. You won’t care though as you’re committed to your idea and are convinced you can make it work. There’s a steep learning curve just to get on top of the red-tape you have to deal with – and deal with it you must, or it will haunt you later.

If you can’t read a balance sheet or a profit and loss statement you should learn how, find someone you trust who can, or give up immediately and work for someone else until you’ve figured it out. Running a business where you aren’t making a profit and have no idea of when you will or how you’ll (probably) get there isn’t fun. It’s not even really a business, you’re just giving cash away.

Once you get established, the hard work doesn’t end – you realise it’s only just beginning. Now you’ve got staff and premises and stock and monthly overheads bigger than your annual turnover a few years ago. People’s livelihoods depend on you making the right decisions – and your ego is on the line. The rewards go up but so do the stakes.

If this sounds like a nightmare to you, think very carefully about whether you really want to run your own business, or whether you’d rather just find a job somewhere interesting.

If this sounds like your idea of a great time – congratulations, you’re probably an entrepreneur.

How I went from construction to running an international beauty franchise

Barry Oakhill is the UK master franchisor for Biothecare Estétika, an international brand with twelve UK stores that offer non-invasive beauty and aesthetic treatments to customers.

He previously worked in the construction and distribution sector in various corporate roles. A company specialising in non-invasive beauty and aesthetic treatments was not an area he had any experience in but he was taken with the company straight away after meeting with Biothecare Estetika, a Spanish beauty brand that was looking for a UK master franchisor, at a trade show in 2010.

Believing there was a sizeable market opportunity for quality beauty treatments that deliver real results for customers, he bought the UK licence for Biothecare Estetika. Here, Barry Oakhill shares his advice for potential franchisors and franchisees.

The Business Show 2013 - A brief Report

20130609_232220.jpgWent to the Business show 2013 held at Excel London on the 6th and 7th June 2013. Fabulous, insightful event............. tonnes of amazing and valuable information plus wonderful value for money offers (would mention some of these below), lots of competitions and free gifts were on offer.

It was a must-attend for anyone...
(a): interested in starting a business...and ready to turn their idea into reality,
(b): just started or been in business for a while....and looking to grow.

There were so many visitors all thirsting for knowledge from the many seminars and workshops,........ clamouring around the exhibitor stands eager to learn what's new and how the exhibitors could help build, enhance or grow their business(es).

There were so many people at the seminars and workshops. The doors were packed full of people who couldn't even get in the halls, the windows were blocked with people looking in from the outside and inside - so many people were sitting on the floor... the speakers didn't have much space to move around.
20130606_122843.jpg
In fact, it was so full that one of the businesses speaking at the event had to start shooting a video of the speaker and collecting email addresses of people who couldn't get into the hall to send them a copy of the video and I happened to be one of those (a smart way to build up a contact list of people /businesses who are interested in your product or services). I even had to stand in front of a stall for over 15 minutes to speak to an exhibitor...that was how good and smoking hot the event was.

Keynote speakers at this event are some of UK's most influential and successful entrepreneurs, like:
Males: James Caan (from the Dragon's Den TV Show), Warren Knight (CEO and co-founder of Gloople), Levi Roots (owner of Reggae Reggae sauce), Doug Richard (former Dragon's Den star and queen's award holder), Warren Cass (founder of www.business-scene.com)

Females: Shaa Wasmund (voted one of the UK's 6 most connected women), Shweta Jhajharia (awarded London coach of the year consistently since 2009), Supermodel Caprice (known for her commercial nous and business acumen), Lara Morgan (built and sold 99% of Pacific Direct for £20 million), Caroline Marsh (established global business mentoring programs for start-ups and SMEs) and many more.

Here are some of the seminars and workshops I was able to attend:
